Sam Sharpe Update as of May 2020
Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College Diagnostic and Infant Centre, as of May 2020.
We are pleased and excited to see the significant progress that has been accomplished, and that the PACE donated funds are being put to good use.
Ground was broken on April 5, 2017 for the construction of the Infant School and Diagnostic Centre at the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College in St James. The project was launched under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2016.
The Centre is an example of true partnership for the development of the education sector, as funding was provided by:
* Government of Jamaica (GoJ) and Food for the Poor for construction of the facility;
* The Carpenters Union of Ontario and PACE Canada to equip the facility (CAN$108,557.92)
The diagnostic centre includes three (3) diagnostic classrooms with observation rooms, administrative area, computer laboratory/library, meeting/consultation room, a diagnostic play area and bathroom facilities for staff and students. The infant school consist of two (2) classrooms with associated infant bathrooms, administrative area, staff room and associated toilet facilities.
Practical completion was issued in July 2018 and the official opening of the centre was held on October 23, 2018. The Expenditure Report for the funds received from PACE Canada is provided by the Finance Unit of Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College and approved by its Board of Governors. The report indicates that a total of CA$86,385 has been expended to date.
Between September 2019 and January 31, 2020, a total of 215 assessments were undertaken by the centre.
