P.A.C.E. (Canada) adopted Eastside Child Care Centre (in 2008) and East Scarborough Child Care Centre (in 2009). The Centres are administered by the Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough. Each adopted Child Care Centre receives an annual donation from P.A.C.E. (Canada)’s General Fund.
In the area of Toronto where these Centres are located, 46% of families are living below the low income cutoff level and 32% of families are headed by single parents, in comparison to 19.7% in Toronto. Many of the children are either of Aboriginal descent or new to Canada. At the time of adoption by P.A.C.E. (Canada), all the families qualified for Child Care fee government subsidies, with most having been assessed as being unable to afford to contribute any amount towards their fees (net annual family income of CDN $21,000 or lower).
The children are served breakfast, lunch and 2 healthy snacks each day. The daily curriculum calls for each child to receive school readiness and literacy instruction. The Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough also provides other supports (e.g. clothing, food) to the families.
